Mac Desktop Icons and Drives

I can be a bit stuck in my ways. Making the transition from (old) Windows to Mac I still wanted to keep my most commonly used icons on the desktop (even though I have learned to use the dock too). I also like to keep them a certain size. It’s no good having them to big, it wastes space.

So how do we do all of that then…First we make aliases of the Apps that we like, find the app in question and simply right click on it and choose Make Alias. You can then copy that onto the desktop and rename it.

How about the size of the icons, they start off quite large. Well there’s a solution to that to. Right Click anywhere on the desktop and go to Show View Options. You’ll get a dialog like this:

Just tweak the icon size slider. 48×48 is where I’m happy.

One of the things I liked about Snow Leopard was the way drives/dmg mounts appeared on your desktop too, they seemed to vanish in Lion. Found a fix for that too. This time you need to go to the Finder menu and choose preferences.

You should see something like this:

Tick the hard disks and cd/dvds options and all the drives should magically appear.
